Bone Health is the Foundation of Longevity
Bone Mineral Density is a buzzword that has been circling the internet, but what does it mean and how can you track your own?
Peak bone mass occurs between the ages of 20 and 30. It is determined by the genes (inherited) and the lifestyle (chosen). The level of physical activity and access to good diet, rich in vitamin D (e.g. Cod-liver oil) and calcium (e.g. milk) from an early age are key factors.
After the age of 30, there is a gradual decline in bone mineral density and women over 50 can expect rapid bone loss (40% inner bone and 10% outer bone), and some men have significant bone loss after the age of 65.
Since 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will have a fracture after the age of 65, it is important to have a DEXA scan at around 50 years of age and another just before your 70th birthday to identify possible risk.
What's Your BMD Score?
Men and women at 50 years old can take action to increase bone density by taking up impact exercises such as jumping, skipping, and pickle ball, as well as adopting a healthy diet and losing weight.
At the age of 70, T and Z scores can be used to guide treatment regimes with, for example, drugs such as bisphosphonates which can help reduce fractures by up to 50%.
A Bone Densitometry Test is used to diagnose osteoporosis and risk of fracture. It compares Bone Mineral Density to that of a young adult peak bone strength, displayed as a T-Score.
It also compares your results to those of people your own age (“age matched’) displayed as your Z-Score.
